Well i noticed that in the box there's some of the original papers, no manual though but anyway the warranty card (which isn't filled out:D) has stamped in red 'New prices are effective April 22, 1974. The 10-7 replaced the 10-5 in 1977 with moving the gas ring from the yoke to the cylinder, and the 10-6 replaced the 10-6, also in 1977, again moving the gas ring from the yoke to the cylinder.Hope that helps and doesn't confuse the matter more.Last edited by will5a1 at 09:38 AM.Reason: spelling. Jinks gets the backlog down (now at about 20 weeks) and when applications for letters are again accepted the fee will increase to $50.Engineering changes are indicated by - numbers, the -5 changed the front sight width to 1/8' from 1/10', the -6 on the heavy barrel model 10 eliminated the screw above the trigger guard. When the frame was made or the complete revolver was assembled.I should note here also that S&W has currently suspended the factory letters until Mr.
S&W apparently also used 'first in - last out' for removing completed revolvers from the vault to fill orders.Only a factory letter can provide an exact 'ship date', there are no internal factory records currently available to indicate 'date of manufacture', i.e. At best, these tables may indicate a probable production era for a particular gun.' As frames were produced they were serial numbered, but the frame itself would sit, in storage, until needed, then the other components would be assembled into a complete revolver - then the completed revolver itself may well sit in storage. This seems to be especially true for early N frames and the M&P models. Guns with sequential serial numbers can be found which were actually shipped decades apart.

Smith and Wesson revolvers were not necessarily assembled nor shipped in serial number sequence. Supica and Nahas own words provide much better an explaination than I can:'It is vitally important to realize that it is impossible to identify the production year of any given gun using these tables alone. Weren't all S&W K frames, or at least Model 10s, number sequentially? And were the -5 and -6 changes, both introduced in 1962, manufactured into the 1970s? I always thought that when S&W added a new dash number to the model number, all new production would include the new dash number and the engineering modifications associated with it.Ĭlermont - No, serial numbers were not sequential, and serial numbers cannot really determine date of 'manufacture'.The SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson) serial number/date tables are approximate, based on infomation provided from several sources, both Messr. I'm having difficulty understanding how your Model 10-5 with an earlier serial number could have been manufactured up to two years after mine was. My Smith & Wesson Model 10-6 with a 4' heavy duty barrel, purchased new in 1973, has a serial number in the 758XXX range. You will probably find aftermarket grips more comfortable than the stock factory wood ones.A G19 mark on the yoke or in the frame cutout is most likely a assembly number or inspectors/foreman's mark, a G19 stamped on the backstrap would be a rack number for a police dept, prison, etc.Enjoy your revolver. Any wear and the price goes down dramatically - a serviceable but finish worn model 10 can still be had for $200 - $225 in my neck of the woods.Your revolver is modern and should handle all of that 130gr FMJ you can run through it, I've found that my 10's shoot the 158gr loads best.
I see NIB, or ANIB ones at local shows for $375 - $350 asking, and I believe they actually sell for $325.
Hud's date (1975) agrees with the SCSW, but as always only a factory letter will provide an exact shipping date.Value is dependant on a bunch of factors, region, actual condition (impossible to judge without the gun in hand) - the original box, papers and tools will always help, but S&W made a bunch of 10-5's from 1962 to 1977 and NIB ones are not that hard to find.
